Gary Groth, CPCC

I am a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach who was trained at the Coaches Training Institute. I have a passion for non-profit organizations and the incredible people who share this passion by working, volunteering and donating to the organizations that make our world a better place to live.

I draw on over twenty years of personal experience in non-profit fundraising, administration, volunteerism, and consulting to round out my professional coaching training and certification. My passion is to partner with non-profit leaders as they take on the huge challenges facing today’s philanthropic organizations and who work tirelessly to make the world a better place for others.

I have been a non-profit fundraiser for over twenty years and a consultant to non-profit organizations. My consulting practice has been in fundraising, board leadership development, and strategic planning and I have a national clientele. I have a great amount of experience working with “edgy” organizations (gay & lesbian, AIDS, gender rights). I have served on several governing boards and advisory boards.

My spouse Michael Hammerschmidt and I had a civil marriage ceremony in Massachusetts in April 2007 (we had a religious marriage ceremony ten years ago) and we raise an adopted Russian teenage son. Our family also includes two black cats and a dog (and I am solidly a “dog person”). I have traveled around the world and have lived in India where I worked with non-profit student activist groups while living in an Indian university governed by Gandhian philosophy of non-violence and self reliance. My experience living in India and traveling the world greatly informs my work as a coach.

For me, there is nothing better than ending a day of being with clients than walking on the beach in front of my house and collecting sea glass, hanging out with my son, cooking, listening to a great and diverse collection of music on albums and CDs, playing catch with the dog, reading, learning something new (I am currently learning to speak Hindi and how to crochet). I am a terrific cook, a fanof opera, am passionate about family genealogy and I am the keeper of my family archives of photos and documents. I am a Jew with a fascination and love for world religions, practices, beliefs, and cultures.

Passion for the extreme came later in my life. I am now an avid snowboarder and became a snowboarding instructor—including the half pipe and terrain park and I recently learned to surf while on vacation in Costa Rica! My son and I have also created a family tradition and bonding ritual of plunging into the frigid ocean on New Year’s morning (Michael takes the photos!). Great fun!
